Teaching Philosophy

Dr. Spencer teaches a classical technique, with an emphasis on proper breathing and freedom from excess muscular tension. This technique can be successfully adapted to almost every style of singing, from opera and art song to musical theatre and jazz standards.

  • Voice lessons for less experienced singers will focus on encouraging the student’s joy in singing while developing proper breathing technique. Simple games can encourage pitch matching, and an introduction to the basics of music theory will teach students to read music.
  • Voice lessons for more experienced singers will cover the same material as stated above, and will integrate a deeper discussion of vocal technique. Repertoire will be tailored to the student’s individual level of skill and interest.
  • For those students interested in competing in district choral competitions or seeking admission in to a university music program, Dr. Spencer will help prepare audition repertoire and teach audition techniques.

Occasionally, students will be offered an opportunity to perform in a recital. Participation is optional, and the emphasis will be on building confidence and developing performance skills.
